Columbine Montessori opened its doors in 1976 and has served the
South Jefferson County and Columbine areas since. The school has
been licensed under the same ownership and location since 1984,
making it one of the senior preschools in the state. The school
is small, no more than 35 children at any time. In some contexts
small can mean challenge. We have capitalized on small to
develop a tightly focused academic program unique among our
peers.
We start with the Montessori precepts and
materials, a phonetic approach to language arts, and the
individual attention that is the hallmark of any quality child
development program. From that, we have perfected a niche
specialization in nurturing “reading readiness”. Our methods
have proven to be effective preparation for both public and
private school continuations.
Our half-day programs consist of a range of
3, 4 and 5-day programs and are available through Kindergarten.
We offer either morning or afternoon sessions, but no all-day
selection. Nor do we offer day care. Various day care providers
in the area have collaborated with us, as the occasions have
arisen, in providing transportation services between our school
and their facilities.
We have a full complement of Montessori
equipment, exercises and trained teachers. The four basic areas
of practical life, sensorial, language and math are well
represented in one large room. Our classes are not segregated by
age, but rather designed to tap the benefits of interaction
between ages. These benefits include behavioral expectations,
social self-control, observation and academic stimulation.
Various other classroom focus points are
devoted to life or earth sciences, media, reading and floor
lessons. There is a well-appointed playground. Music classes are
offered twice weekly. Field trips are arranged periodically for
the Kindergarten enrollment.
We invite you to read our Parent’s
Handbook, browse through our FAQ’s and call us to set up an
observation appointment. We would be happy to make time to
discuss the appropriateness of the Montessori methods and our
programs in your child’s further development.
“The noblest thing most of us can achieve
is to raise a child.”
